Headings (Beta)

Headings (Beta)

#63Beta

Headings was added in Kosshi 1.20.0 as a beta feature. Enable it in Settings > Beta. In Preview and exports, rows beginning with # are treated as headings, and rows beginning with % are treated as comments.

Some feedback has already been shared in the Kosshi 1.20 topic. Feedback from people who use outliners to turn an outline into a finished piece of writing would be especially valuable.

As far as I know, this is a new approach to using an outliner to turn an outline into a finished piece of writing, so I’m still deciding whether to keep Headings in this form. Feedback will help guide improvements and the decision on whether to adopt this design as the final version.

Hi Junichi,

I see Headings mode and Prose mode as complementary.

For me, Headings mode is useful for organizing the overall structure of a document. I can treat a section as a cohesive block, with the heading and its body text staying together. Prose mode is useful at a more granular level because it lets me use individual rows as normal paragraphs without imposing formatting rules on everything underneath them.

I find that the two modes work really well together. I get the structure of an outliner without giving up the flexibility of a document editor. For example, I can write a long-form piece using Headings mode, while still using Prose mode when I want to mix regular paragraphs with bullet lists or task lists.

For me, that combination is what makes an outliner such a powerful writing tool. I can keep the overall structure organized while still having the freedom to format the actual content in whatever way makes sense.

Hi Bob,

Thank you for the feedback. That's exactly what I wanted to do with Headings and Prose. I'm glad you see it that way.

Prose lets you format each row. Headings lets you work with a whole section. You might plan a piece of writing in an outliner, then finish it in another app. I'd like to make it easy to do both in Kosshi.

I'm still not sure how comfortable it feels to write and edit a long draft in Kosshi. Heading levels follow the outline structure, so it looks and feels different from a normal Markdown editor. I sometimes wonder if I'd want to finish the draft in another Markdown app. I think the UI may still need a little more work.

Your feedback helps a lot. Thanks again.
